XP and Vista USB 2.0 - Detect if your System has USB2

USB2 is so much quicker than USB1. This tech-recipe will show you how to determine if you system has the new USB 2.0 capability.

USB 1.1 allowed a maximum transfer rate of 12 Mbits/second.
USB 2.0 allows a maximum transfer rate of 480 Mbits/second.

Which would you rather have?!?

Externally USB1 and USB2 ports look the same. Here is how to detect if you system has USB 2.0 (USB2) installed.

First I'll describe this in XP:

1. Click Start
2. Click Control Panel
3. Double-click System
4. Select the Hardware tab
5. Click Device Manager
6. Click the (+) before Universal Serial Bus controllers

If you see any entry that says "Enhanced USB Controller", you likely have USB2. Many times you will see USB2 in the entry as well.

In Vista, you follow the same directions until you select System in the Control Panel. Then you click the Device Manager link in the Tasks column on the right of the System window.

When you expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section, you should be able to tell if it is USB1 or USB2.
